Ecological Footprint accounting measures the demand on and the supply of the planet.
In other words, the framework measures how fast we consume resources and generate waste compared to how fast nature can absorb waste and generate resources.
The framework categorizes the Earth's surface into 5 types: cropland, grazing land, forest land, fishing grounds, and built-up land. As well as accounting for the resources we consume from them. (i.e. plant-based food and fiber products, livestock and fish products, timber and other forest products, space for urban infrastructure).
The framework can be scaled to account for the local, regional, national, or global level.
