ABOUT
The modern world is relatively new. Internal combustion engines, factory assembly lines, microelectronics, urban development, large scale agriculture, and other major advancements were all refined within the last 120 years or so.
These massive leaps in development over such a short amount of time have led to a lot of uncertainty regarding our impact on the planet. However, in the last few decades, scientists and experts have been busy collecting data on the health of our planet’s ecosystems and climate.
The results of this research confirms that human activities are in fact playing a role in the declining health and viability of our plant. Including, but not limited to, a rising global temperature, changes in the pH of the ocean, habitat loss, and environmental pollution due to human waste.
So what now?
. We rely too heavily on our advancements to remove them from our society completely. So are we doomed?
I would argue no. There is a way to exist within the natural constraints of our world, enjoy the comforts of modern life, and build a thriving economy.
So what is this pathway to a healthy viable planet where human society can continue to advance and thrive? Sustainability.
Put simply, sustainability is the ability to maintain something at a certain level. Therefore, in the context this site, the definition of sustainability is the ability to meet all of the needs of our modern society without jeopardizing the ability of future generations to do the same.
Sustainability requires a new way of looking at the world. Recognizing that everything is part of a complex system that interacts and balances other complex systems. Acknowledging that the economy, society, and the environment are intertwined. It’s for this reason I was drawn to the field of sustainability.
As the son of successful, entrepreneurial parents, I understand the pivotal role businesses play in a thriving society. Unfortunately, the externalities from business operations also generate the biggest negative impacts on our planet.
This realization motivated me to commit myself to helping businesses, schools, cities, and organizations build a more sustainable tomorrow.
As Cliff Bar & Co.'s mission statement reads, we should all strive to "think like a tree." Since a tree is just one part of a larger system that "operates on 100% renewable energy, recycles all its waste, and sustains and improves the places in which they grow."
